Just keep knitting…

Losing my voice…. January 30, 2005

Living with someone definitely has its perks. For instance, having someone to help with all the mundane chores, someone to make dinner (or go out and get you sushi when you’re sick), and someone to keep warm with. It also has its drawbacks. Jered caught some nasty flu/cold bug at work and passed it on to me. It hasn’t yet affected my nose (thank goodness, we’re having our catering tasting today!) but my throat hurts like a bugger! I can hardly talk, but its been an excellent excuse to sit and knit away the day!

Yesterday we had our pre-marriage class that is mandated by the church. Most of it was interesting and helpful, but other parts of it made me feel like a Sinner with a capital “I.” We apparently go to a pretty hellfire and brimstone church, which neither of us are liking too much. We just found this church and registered in the hopes of finding a priest to marry us in May, but every week the church gets a little more conservative. At least both Jered and I feel uncomfortable. It’s hard to be a liberal catholic!

I finished knitting clapotis late Friday night and took it with to the marriage class yesterday where i diligently wove in all the ends and finished unraveling the dropped stitch ladders. What a pain!!! The yarn I used was a silk mohair wool blend and I practically had to break pieces of the fiber to get the dropped stitches to fall, it took forever. But now she is done and i love her! Like Froggy I was unsure how clapotis would wear, but it turns out that she is quite versatile! I’m going to go out and buy a pin/brooch to wear it in more formal settings. Its wears great as a wide scarf too. It was definitely worth the work! I may make another for my mom’s birthday (but that’s not until november, so i’ve got awhile!)

Leo is coming along very quickly now. I’m an inch from the armhole shaping, and I can knit it in my classes so I know Leo will be done by the wedding (which has been my goal). I got my yarn in the mail from Elann. I bought four skeins of sock yarn for two pair of socks (one for me, one for Jered), and of course the Peruvian Wool for Rogue. I’ve told Jered I won’t start Rogue until I finish Leo, but its soooo hard! I love having tons of projects going so I can mix things up a little, but I am getting projects done much quicker this way. Has anyone else tried this? (only having one or two projects going at a time).

Well I should probably shower, maybe the steam will help my voice :)
I leave you with a picture of Jinx…(who has been fighting incessantly with Floyd all morning)

A class to knit in January 25, 2005

I had my career counseling class today, I love it. Its not so much that I enjoy the topic, in fact its one of my more mundane classes when it comes to subject matter, but the professor for this class is the same professor I had last semester for group, and I know she doesn’t mind if I knit in class. Its also a fairly big class (30+) and so I can sit in the back and just knit away for 3 hours…ahhh! We got out of class half an hour early tonight, but I was still able to make progress on dearest Leo. Proof:

My friend Eleni is in that class too, and she brought her crocheting tonight, we are long lost twins, we’re always having the same ideas at the same time. I’m hoping she might teach me a little about crocheting this semester, I know how to do a basic chain but that’s pretty much all I know how to do.

Jered made boca burgers for dinner tonight, they were really yummy. They warrented a trip to the grocery store for lettuce and tomato, so I got some new cereal too. I think I’m too easily amused by things because I am a little more excited about having a bowl of fiber one honey cluster cereal than i should be :)
I just had one of those generally overall good days today. I was able to return my two books for addictions class, so that’s 90 bucks that can go toward the two books i forgot to buy for the classes i’m actually taking!
Work went by surprisingly fast today too…Apparently yesterday was the most depressing day of the year according to some British chap’s prediction, so today, by comparison just seems that much better.

Back to School Cool January 24, 2005

Well its back to school for me! I had my second class tonight and decided to drop my extra 5th class. It feels good to cut myself some slack! I just have to figure out how to return my two books since I bought them online at Barnes and Nobles…
It has been bitterly cold here the past three days, we had that front come in, but unfortunately we did not get any snow and didn’t get to skip out on work or school today :(
I’ve been knitting away at clapotis and am almost done with her, here is a picture I took Sunday afternoon before I got to the decrease rows.

Floyd has claimed clapotis for himself as you can see!

But how can you resist this face?

I got my yarn in the mail from Elann today for the socks I’m planning to start once I get clapotis done. I’ve decided this year that I’m going to try and have no more than three projects going at once. Usually I can start 4 or 5 things at once but then it takes forever to finish any one of them. So I’ve come up with a list of knitting goals for the new year I know its a bit late, but I wanted to prioritize the projects I have really wanted to make. Hopefully I will get through all of these, two at a time!
Leo
Rogue
Audrey
Tempting
Belle Epoque
Socks Socks and more Socks
Handwarmers from SnBN

I’ll keep adding to this list as I think of other projects I want to start. I don’t have much of a stash so I don’t have to worry about yarn dieting. I’m more in the starving knitter category, wish I could afford a large stash, but I’m a poor grad student and can’t really afford to splurge on non-project yarn. One day…
In fact, I think part of the reason I’m getting my master’s is to be able to buy more yarn. That’s the plan for now at least!

Argh! January 23, 2005

This is Jered… I have hijacked this blog for an entry. Esther has taken to playing Pirates of the Spanish Main, and what’s a pirate game without a pirate name?

Here is Esthers…

My pirate name is:
Calico Ethel Vane

Often indecisive, you can’t even choose a favorite color. You’re apt to follow wherever the wind blows you, just like Calico Jack Rackham, your namesake. You tend to blend into the background occaisionally, but that’s okay, because it’s much easier to sneak up on people and disembowel them that way. Arr!

Get your own pirate name from fidius.org.

Snow Days January 20, 2005

Filed under: Uncategorized — estherknits @ 10:08 pm

Work was delayed an hour and a half today due to yesterday’s snow and ice accumulation. It’s been nice having a little bit of time to sleep in. I had a midmorning doctor’s appointment today and I ended up waiting around over 2 hours, but, it was a good thing. I spent the 2 hours working on leo and I have to say that it is really coming along nicely. Leo is officially 11 inches tall now, which is only 6 inches from the arm shaping! It seems to grow so slowly, but its an easy pattern and I don’t have to count or bring along a pattern. Clapotis is a little closer to the decreases now too, I think I only have 3 repeats of the straight rows left. Dropping stitches is still a blast, though. Next time I make it I’m not using the Orchid yarn it has broken on me 3 times already. I don’t knit super tight and I haven’t been snagging the yarn on anything, it just seems to randomly get really weak and completely break apart, what a bummer! Its such a pretty color of pink, like fresh berries, which is rather refreshing in this cold weather!
We had the first Yorktown Knitting Meetup tonight, there were 4 of us! Well, if you count my mom and Jered :) Another member came too, she is a fairly new knitter and I taught her how to purl tonight. It was really nice actually having someone come to the meeting! Hopefully we’ll grow a little over the next few months.

I’m hoping for a snow day so i can stay home and take pictures of leo, clapotis, floyd and jinx. I suppose we shall see if tomorrow is a picture post!

Pictures! January 17, 2005

I realized that I never posted pictures of the hat that I made for Jered for Christmas! Well here it is in all its SNBN cabled glory…

I have gotten about 9 inches into the front of Leo over the weekend. Hopefully I will be able to take some pictures of it later. I took a few of it earlier this weekend but its only a few inches so its not really worth the picture!
I went shopping with my boss and another one of our colleagues today. I ended up only spending $10, which was quite nice because that means we can go see another movie later this week! I’m not too excited about this week starting…tomorrow I just have work, but Wednesday classes start over again, ugh! I am a bit burned out with school, but this semester should go by pretty quickly, i hope! Clapotis is almost done and those pictures will be uploaded later this week too. But tonight I leave you all with a pictures of what I seem to be craving on a daily basis…Jered’s sushi, Yum!
